DR. MED. MICHAEL KAMMINGA

Dr. Michael Kamminga was born in the Ruhr region of Germany and studied human medicine at the University of Essen from 1977 to the end of 1984, graduating with distinction (“very good”).During his studies, he developed a strong interest in surgical medicine and gained early experience working as a student in various regional surgical clinics.

Even as a young physician, his particular focus was on trauma surgery—especially reconstructive joint surgery. This specialization enabled him to earn a scholarship from the AO Foundation (formerly AO International), the world’s oldest and largest trauma surgery organization. As part of this fellowship, he worked from 1989 onward as an AO Fellow at Sunnybrook Medical Centre in Toronto, Canada—a primary trauma and orthopedic center. There, his focus was on the treatment of polytrauma patients and reconstructive joint procedures.

Dr. Kamminga returned to Germany with this international expertise and obtained his board certification as a Specialist in General Surgery in 1991. At Evangelisches Krankenhaus Gelsenkirchen, located in the heart of the Ruhr region, he advanced his work in minimally invasive surgical techniques, helping the hospital become one of the first in Germany to perform endoscopic abdominal procedures and arthroscopic shoulder surgeries.

In 1997, he was certified as an Instructor by the German Arthroscopy Association (AGA), authorizing him to train others in minimally invasive joint surgery. Starting in 1994, Dr. Kamminga conducted long-term follow-up studies on an endoscopic surgical technique developed at the evangelical hospital, and in 1999 he earned his doctorate (Dr. med.) from the University of Münster with magna cum laude. That same year, he was also board certified as a Specialist in Trauma Surgery.

In 2004–2005, Dr. Kamminga temporarily took over as Chief Physician of the Department of Trauma and Sports Orthopaedic Surgery at Elisabeth Hospital in Oberhausen, where he practiced highly specialized knee surgery (ACL reconstruction and revisions, cartilage repair procedures, osteotomies) and also developed new focuses including shoulder surgery, advanced joint replacement, and complex trauma surgery.

In 2006, he was awarded the title of Specialist in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, Special Trauma Surgery. Until 2009, Dr. Kamminga continued as Senior Consultant in trauma, hand, and orthopaedic surgery. He established a major focus on shoulder surgery (including minimally invasive techniques, prosthetic joint replacement, and fracture treatment), and was among the few surgeons in the region performing elbow joint replacements.

Since 2009, Dr. Michael Kamminga has co-directed the Procelsio Clinic alongside his colleague Dr. Körsmeier. Today, the clinic is considered one of Germany’s leading centers for innovative joint surgery.

Former Patient of Dr. med. Michael Kamminga

“Very thoughtful and competent consultation during the preoperative discussions. He truly connects with people, eases uncertainty, and builds trust. The surgery went perfectly. Postoperative complaints: none. Two years after the operation – everything is still great. I wouldn’t undergo any future surgery within his field without first getting his opinion.”
