Mini-Prosthesis (Episealer)

The mini-prosthesis represents the smallest and therefore most tissue-preserving form of joint replacement. This method is particularly well suited for treating small, localized cartilage defects and preserves the knee joint’s natural structures, such as the cruciate and collateral ligaments, the joint capsule, and the menisci.

Because there is some overlap with the technique of cartilage cell transplantation, it is especially important to carefully evaluate which therapy is most appropriate in each case. Both the patient’s age and the condition of the bone beneath the cartilage defect play a crucial role in the decision-making process. Even in cases where a cartilage transplantation has failed, the mini-prosthesis offers an excellent therapeutic alternative. For a mini-prosthesis (Episealer), a custom-made implant is essential. The implant must fit perfectly into the surrounding healthy cartilage to ensure smooth joint function and to avoid damaging the opposing joint surface.
